The
mathematics program at SMS
implements the NCTM standards.
These standards, along with the New Jersey Core
Curriculum Content math standards and the diocesan
curriculum guidelines, emphasize problem solving,
communication, reasoning and estimation in conjunction with
computation after the basic skills have been mastered.
The traditional methods of drill and practice are
complemented by the use of technology cooperative
grouping activities. Students
are encouraged to make mathematics a lived reality and not a
simple classroom routine.
The scope and sequence of the curriculum involve
numeration, operations, measurement, statistics, geometry,
problem solving and algebraic concepts, which begin in
kindergarten. In
eighth grade, students who qualify are given an Algebra I
course that prepares them for advanced work in high school.
Our mathematics program includes use of manipulatives
and calculators, including graphing calculators for grades 7
and 8, along with textbook modeling.
The integration of Christian values is applied on a
daily basis, particularly in small group settings, which
support cooperation, patience and compassion for others.
The
mathematics curriculum is a continuous, spiraling program
with age-appropriate skills, building from concrete to
abstract. Math
is likewise incorporated into other curriculum areas:
Problem solving and critical thinking link with language
arts, computer study, science and social studies.
Skills in using data, statistics, fractions,
measurement and estimation are applied in all curriculum
areas.
An
advanced Math Program is also available for those who
qualify. Details are found under Activities/MathClub.
The
Math Counts Team, consisting of Taylor C., Lauren B.,
Timothy C. and Bridget M., are gearing up for the annual
Math Counts competition which is held at Rowan University.
